Generative Engine Optimization: Getting Cited by AI
A growing share of searches now end inside an AI-generated answer, never reaching a traditional list of blue links. Generative Engine Optimization, or GEO, is the practice of becoming one of the few sources those answers cite — and it is won differently from classic rankings.
From Links to Answers
ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews read across the web, synthesize an answer, and credit a small handful of sources. Being one of those cited sources is the new front page. If your brand is not in the answer, you are invisible to the user no matter how well you rank on the page below it.
Structure for Extraction
AI engines favour content they can lift cleanly and quote with confidence. Clear questions and answers, plain-language definitions, lists, and structured data all make a passage easy to extract and attribute — which makes it far more likely to be the one the model reaches for.
- Answer real questions in self-contained, quotable passages.
- Add FAQ and clear structured data to key pages.
- Write plainly — models reward clarity over cleverness.
Publish an llms.txt
An llms.txt file at your domain root gives AI tools a clean, plain-text summary of who you are, what you offer, and where your best content lives. It is a low-effort, high-leverage signal that is quickly becoming a standard part of being readable by answer engines.
Earn the Citation
AI tools disproportionately cite brands that are widely mentioned and trusted across the web. Consistent facts, third-party references, and genuine authority still matter — arguably more than ever, because the model is choosing whom to trust on the user's behalf.
GEO Amplifies SEO
None of this replaces classic SEO; it builds on it. The same fundamentals — crawlable content, structured data, authority, and clarity — feed both Google's index and the language models that increasingly sit on top of it. Do the fundamentals well and you win in both places at once.
